Jax dropped low to the ground, and army-crawled from the beam he was standing behind to a stack of construction supplies approximately ten feet in front of him. He would need a better position to take down the bird if Jade got stuck. He wouldn’t want to miss his shot and hit his sister. Jax was hidden much better than Jade had been, as he was dressed all in black from his head to toe. Even with his black hair, the only visible part of him was his face, which he kept toward the ground while he crawled.
As he made it to the pile, he slowly moved to a kneeling position behind the lumber to see how much the fight had changed in the few moments it took to crawl. Surprisingly, not much. The harpy was still dripping blood as she circled away from Jade. Jade was slowly moving in step with the bird while keeping just out of the reach of the bird’s clawed arms as she assessed the situation.
The girls continued to circle each other, but neither moved closer. The bird seemed to sense that Jade was more of a threat than she appeared. Jax could almost smile at that. Most people underestimated him and his sister, but being raised by one of the best night human hunters out there had its perks. Jax leveled his gun in front of him. Jade had a time limit because the rest of the team was hitting the nest soon to reduce the number of harpies. They had already picked a successor that was willing to keep to the rules. Without the leader at the nest, the team would have no trouble eliminating the rest of the harpies.
Jax had the shot and waited for his sister’s approval before a hand came up beside him and pulled it down.
‘This is her fight,’ Rommy mouthed to him. They were too close to speak now as the bird would know their position if they did.
Jax glared at Rommy. Jade was his sister and the only family he cared about. There was no way he was going to let her be skewered by a bird to prove that she wasn’t ready to be a full-time hunter. Rommy and he both knew Jade was more than ready to join the hunters as a full-fledged member, but there was always the possibility for even the best hunter to be taken down by an unpredictable night human … especially one that knew it was her death if she lost.

Review of Exiled by Bethany Adams

Spanning the gap between Sundered and Seared, Exiled is a lovely light read full of the usual expansive world building, beautiful Morananian language and general gorgeousness I have come to expect from the series. It introduces us to Delbin, an exile from Moranania who has been on earth for over 100 years, and Inona who is a Morananian scout tasked with checking in on those who have been exiled.  But with Kien on the run on Earth, a quick check in for Inona leads to a world of trouble!

Although a Novella, there is a lot going on in Exiled and I feel like it’s setting up Seared quite nicely.  Kien’s involvement  brings an exciting twist with the poisoned magic still going strong on Earth despite the efforts of Lyr and the others back on the other side. Delbin has more going on that it first appears and I’m sure that he and Ralan together will be a real force to be reckoned with in the future.  I’m also loving the new laid back Lyr at the moment, i’m guessing that all these elves who have spent a while on Earth are rubbing off on him!

It would have been nice to have had a bit longer with Delbin and Inona and I’m hoping that their story continues in following books in the series.  Roll on Seared!

Review of M by Jo Michaels

A pill.  One pill, one ability, a superpower of sorts useful or pointless, good or bad (A Bertie Bots every flavoured bean of the designer drug world.) Want one?  That will be $1 Million.  M is the drug that everyone wants but only the super rich can afford.  It isn’t long before M2 reaches the black market, same super power but at a fraction of the price, what could possibly go wrong?

For Griffin, a self proclaimed EmFree, his world comes tumbling down when his girlfriend gains an ability through taking M2 at a new years party.  His relationship in tatters he starts to plot his revenge against those who took his girlfriend from him, a small victory becoming a horror story and a spiral of events snowballing into catastrophe.

This is a real heart thumper of a ride, from Griffin’s first successful yet misguided attack  through to the terrifying end, this is a book you will not want to put down.  Thinking back now there are so many issues woven into this story, some will break your heart and many will have you thinking long after the last page.  It’s set in the future, but it’s not so distant that it isn’t out of reach, many of the ideas are within grasp and that’s what makes it all the more exciting and terrifying.  The science bit is super sciency and the twists you won’t see coming, so i’ll be quiet about those!

The characters are amazing, Articus Bane is the most charismatic bad guy and Griffin can be kind of annoying as a protagonist, he’s certainly not your typical hero, if you can even call him that at times.  There are certainly a number of failing moral compasses going on and the lines are often blurred between doing the right thing and doing what they think is right.

If you want a fast paced, thoughtful, heartbreaking and terrifying read, take a dose of M.  5 amazing stars!

Review of Defender of Stargor (Book 1 in the Fireblood Saga) by Toya Richardson

Melora’s world is going to be turned upside down in a big way!  Being brought up by her mother on a diet of fantastic stories about the land of Stargor her life has been fairly run of the mill, until a series of vivid dreams start plaguing her.  Soon after, her mother is found murdered and she discovers that in fact Stargor is real and she is being hunted by those who murdered her mother.  Jitsun, the man from her dreams is there to help and her pet dog is not quite who he seemed.  Both arrive to help her travel to Stargor to fulfil her destiny as Defender!

There is much to enjoy about book 1 in this series, not too much time is spent on Earth and I liked how realistically hesitant Melora was about travelling with strangers.  The world building is done at a nice pace, plenty to take in but not overwhelming.  My favourite section was a training session with Banzal which really reminded me of Luke Skywalker and Yoda in Empire Strikes Back! These new skills and talents don’t come easily to Melora and her training is hard, but what does come easily is her ability to lead and command her people adding to the reason that she is truly the defender.  There is a neat little trick with her weapons as well, which I won’t divulge but it’s such a unique idea!   There is is clearly a lot more to come in this series, she has lots of travels still to take and lots of peril is sure to follow, i’m excited to read where her travels take her next!

Ella Carina, crown princess of Aelawyn, knows brutality and lies—she’s seen the way her father rules. Princess. Possession. To her father, the words had the same meaning. She was only as valuable as the alliance formed with her betrothal. Her freedom comes from an unlikely place: an attack on the castle.

I was in my room, lost in my own worries, when the world as I knew it was torn to shreds.
My room was large, and with only a bed and wardrobe inside, it was far too spacious than anything I needed. But it was also my sanctuary. It had to be. Father didn’t allow me to leave the space without an escort, and only then when he gave me permission, which wasn’t often. I considered myself lucky to have a window until that day.
The horrors I saw from that window would stay with me forever.
Sitting quietly in the alcove, watching the comings and goings of the villagers, was how I learned the ever-changing styles in fashion and beauty, how gentlemen and ladies were to properly act, and how some acted very improperly when they thought no one was watching.
The day the Kingdom of Aelawyn fell, I was watching and envying the lives of her people.
Nothing seemed amiss as three large, covered wagons approached the front gate. The man driving the horses that pulled the lead wagon shouted to the guard atop the gate, announcing that they carried supplies, taken from another forest raid. They were granted immediate entry, Father’s guard raising the portcullis for them.
One by one, the wagons crept into the yard. As soon as the gate slammed back to the ground behind the third wagon, a loud whoop sounded. The guards were stunned, so much so that it took far too long for them to spring into action and defend the castle. The wagon canvases were torn to shreds as a small army, clad in armor and donning swords, shields, and all manner of weaponry, unfolded from the wagons and began to slash their way across the yard.
They did not take time to discern villager from soldier, male from female, innocent from guilty.
A river of blood flowed in their wake, draining between the cobblestones. They were so skilled and efficient in battle that they entered the castle before any alarm could be raised to stop them. In no time, they’d taken the castle itself.
