Review of Loving you with Teeth and Claws (a Dead Things Prequel) by Martina McAtee

Loving you with Teeth and Claws is a prequel to the current Dead Things series.  It promises to be the backstory of Wren and Isa, what it delivers is just so so much more!  Whilst yes, it is the story of how Wren and Isa came to be a couple it’s also very much Neoma’s story too.  It’s fair to say that you don’t have to have read the earlier books in the dead things series to understand what is going on, but I think as a reader it’s a massive bonus to you if you have.  The reason they are all so protective over Neoma, the fact that they are all so incredibly tight knit – it all starts here and the payoff is fantastic.  My heart wrenched at Neoma’s history whilst I was also laughing out loud at Isa’s first reaction to Wren.  I loved the fledgling phases of several of the future relationships in this series and also the cracks starting to show in others.  It’s clear that from early on Isa had her hands full with the younger members of the pack and the trouble they would get themselves into – wren has impeccable timing!  I have to admit that I read the slightly more steamy version that was released into the Venom and Vampires box set and there was a lot of hand fanning going on, but that ultimately felt a distraction to the intricate story and I found myself wanting to get back to what was really going on with Neoma and the others.  It would be lovely to have maybe some short stories about the scrapes the younger ones got themselves into during this period or even now as flashbacks in future books as this story reveals a different side to all of them in a totally endearing way. I’m excited as I know book 3 in the series is coming soon and I glad I’ve now read this as I think it gives me a deeper understanding of what brought them all together to be the pack they are today ❤ 5*

Review of Legends, book 4 of the Lily Singer Adventures by Lydia Sherrer

Lily’s adventures go international!  Part one see’s Lily, Sebastian and Kipling make their way over to the UK, doing the best they can for Madam Barrington before they leave.  Although in a bad way, she is able to impart a bit of knowledge to Lily to help her make a start when she arrives.  Thankfully Kipling is able to join them on this leg of the series and provides the usual comedy relief, whilst Lily sets hard at work tracking down the people and places which can help her most in her quest to locate Morgan’s final resting place and hopefully before John Faust.  Whilst in Revelations, Lily was able to reconnect with her family (good and bad) this is an opportunity for Sebastian to do likewise, although he does have to navigate the tricky waters of being a witch in a wizarding family! This books is pretty much UK based and as a Brit who has visited Oxford, I was interested about how this would be realised.  Massive props to Lydia Sherrer have to be given, girl has done her research!  I could picture the places spoken of as I was reading and I love the description of the old stone buildings taking up a different feeling as Lily traverses them at night; as it’s true that the old stone buildings and narrow streets do seem foreboding when the darkness draws in. I also enjoyed that our narrow “country lanes” got a mention and it’s likely that they would probably be quite the driving rollercoaster for someone used to the huge interstates of the US!

The interlude takes a different approach with both Lily and Sebastian together and the tale turns on it’s head as it becomes almost high fantasy with the fae realm taking centre stage.  It gives amazing insight into Sebastian’s back story though and I was glad to see Lily return to her high spiritedness that she kind of lost in Allies.

The final part is a real payoff insofar as story arc goes.  I really enjoyed how almost all of Lily’s discoveries and previous encounters help her in lots of ways with this part of her quest.  It’s all very thoughtfully done and a real test of Lily and the others to track down Morgan’s final resting place.  The explorations and puzzle solving are a joy to read and make me want to visit Tintagel even more than I already did! The showdown is nothing short of epic (i’m desperate to say more but you know, spoilers) but also quite emotionally fraught as Lily must hope for a perilous plan to go completely right, whilst secretly hoping for a potential defection from John Faust’s camp to aid her if there are any mishaps.

One of the many things I love about this series is that each section is tied off with an epilogue.  I don’t mind cliffhangers but I like that even though there are unanswered questions in Lily’s world, things are still brought to a satisfying close.  I found this even more of a necessity at the closing stages of the final part of book 4, there are some big things that are going on and I found this epilogue to be both particularly touching and hopeful.  I hope that book 5 isn’t too far away.

Mermaid life has never been easy for Verona. Her scars give evidence of her abuse. When her day of reckoning arrives, she is determined to endure exile. According to her father’s experience, exile is better than becoming a land-walker and risking her life among the humans.

A savage hunter draws closer, threatening even the humans. Her only hope is to keep everyone safe until the next full moon, but those around her devise their own plans.

Author Interview with M.A. Phipps!

Yesterday saw the much anticipated re-release for Ultraxenopia by M. A. Phipps!  I’m really chuffed that she had the time to speak with me and answer some questions about one of my favourite series!

Q: Congratulations on the re-release, your new cover is gorgeous!  It’s very different from it’s predecessor.  Were you excited to have the opportunity for a more symbolic cover?

M. A. Phipps: Definitely! While I loved the other cover, it never felt like it really hit the mark for what the story is. It always seemed to have too much of an apocalyptic feel to it, and although there is that element to the story, it’s not what the book is about at its core. It’s much more heavily focused on the science aspect with Wynter’s condition and then of course the Big Brother-esque society of the State and the corrupting influence of power. I wanted something that would convey this sort of ominous medical feel while also tying in the isolation of the world the story is set in. The new cover hit the nail right on the head for what I was after. I’m in love!

Q: Wynter isn’t your typical protagonist, she starts off very much in line with the state, trying to remain just another face in the crowd. What was it like to write a character that underwent such a change?

M. A. Phipps: Wynter is an intriguing character because she doesn’t just show growth in terms of physical strength with her increasing powers but she also shows tremendous growth in strength of mind. I think a lot of readers would probably get frustrated with her, wondering why she isn’t questioning every aspect of her society when in reality, that’s what happens when you’re brainwashed to believe something—it’s happened in history and is still happening today in places like North Korea. You believe what you’re told and you don’t question it because questioning it means putting yourself in danger and could ultimately lead to your death. She’s lived her entire live immersed in this absolutely toxic place and she’s experienced traumas in her past that suppress her urge to fight even more, with the government using fear as a weapon against her. For so long, she was just told ‘that’s the way things are’ and embraced that for the sake of blending in and surviving. So to go from that extreme and then open her eyes to reality was such an interesting experience. It couldn’t just happen overnight and it had to somehow involve something she previously came to terms with and accepted—that was the only way she’d really see the depraved depths of her society and understand just how wrong it is. And I think that growth of mind and will really made up for the weakness she showed with her degenerating health through the book and still made her seem strong in spite of that. So yeah, in a lot of ways, it sort of felt like her story told itself. She’s been such a commanding presence in my head over the last few years that everything just falls into place around her, and thankfully, she’s been incredibly easy to write (knock on wood—still have Part Three to get through!)

Q: Dr Richter is a character that I love to hate, did he start out as the villain of the piece or did he evolve like that?

M. A. Phipps: Oh, Dr. Richter. When I came up with this story, I always knew it wouldn’t have some typical big baddie, like the head of the government or anything like that. It had to be more intimate and personal—someone Wynter knew in some respect. Dr. Richter was always going to end up as the villain, although I did originally play with the idea of starting him off as sympathetic to Wynter’s situation and almost as a friend to her. But then I realized that wouldn’t work. You can’t do what Dr. Richter does to her and be a “nice guy.” And although Dr. Richter uses science as an excuse for his actions, you can’t torture another human being the way he tortures her and be redeemable at the same time. So, I guess to answer your question, there was the consideration of making him a better person and then the final decision to show his true colors from the get go. Saying that, he does still evolve…into an even more horrible person.

Q: If you were forced to sit an exam, like Wynter, that would map out the rest of your life, what do you think the outcome would be?

M. A. Phipps: What’s funny is that the exam Wynter sits was actually based on a real test! It’s called Kudos and it’s this software where you answer a series of questions and it tells you what sort of jobs you’d be good at. I took this exam in middle school, and I remember thinking, “What if I HAD to do this job it’s telling me I’d be good at?” And that’s where the idea behind the placement exam came from. This thought that we don’t truly have a say in our future and are instead forced into a career where our strengths can be utilized. Now, if this test actually existed, I’d like to hope I’d end up with some sort of creative job (although books and art aren’t allowed in the State, so there goes both of my careers!), but since I’m good at math, I’d probably end up in a job similar to what Wynter was projected—banking or some such.

Q: If you could be any of your characters for a day, who would you choose to be?

M. A. Phipps: As much as I wouldn’t want to experience the crippling pain she goes through, I do think it would be cool to experience an awesome power like Wynter’s. I mean, come on, telekinesis? I could just look at the TV remote and it would come to me. That would be awesome.

Q: If you could have dinner with any 5 writers or fictional characters who would you choose?

M. A. Phipps: J.R.R. Tolkien will always by my #1 choice. The Lord of the Rings has been such a huge part of my life, and I would just love to talk to him about it and fangirl with the creator of my biggest obsession. He also had a really interesting life with his involvement in the World Wars, so I think in general, he would’ve been a fascinating person to speak with. I also greatly admire authors like J.K. Rowling, Dennis Lehane (Shutter Island is amazing), and Stephen King, so I definitely wouldn’t turn down a dinner party invite with that lot. Maybe we could get together and do a seance to talk to Tolkien, ha! In terms of fictional characters, no one will ever top Mr. Darcy from Pride and Prejudice, so let’s throw him in for good measure!

Thank you so so much for stopping by and talking to me today, I wish you the best of luck with the re-release!

“This isn’t how it looks,” I stammer.
A sarcastic laugh explodes from his lungs, echoing through the otherwise soundless bar.
“Really? Because, from where I’m standing, it looks like you’re one of them.”
“I’m not.” The words sound weak and unconvincing.
He pushes the barrel of the gun against my temple, and our faces are so close now that I can feel his heated breath against my lips.
“Why should I believe you?” he growls.
I tense my jaw, spitting my next words through clenched teeth. “If I was one of them, they would already be here,” I hiss back.
The State doesn’t play games. He must know that better than anyone. They wouldn’t waste time sending in a single person when they could more efficiently get the job done by sending a whole team. If I was one of them, the Enforcers would already be here. The State wouldn’t bother with this game of charades.
His expression doesn’t change, but I can see his true reaction in his gaze—the doubt that appears there. He seems to grasp that what I’ve said makes sense, but at the same time, can’t wrap his head around any other reason why I’d be here.
He wavers, and I can feel his uncertainty in the way the point of his gun wobbles against my skin. His eyes remain fixed on mine, making my heart race even faster. I only glance away when I notice a movement to my right. Looking up, I see another man now standing beside us.
“We can’t take any chances,” the man grumbles before spitting on the floor in front of me. “We should kill her to be sure.”
A deep-rooted panic washes over me, the fear like a smoldering and inextinguishable ember. Despite everything I’ve seen, I still have my doubts as to what’s really happening, and I can’t help worrying that this won’t end well. How can it? I won’t even be given the chance to defend myself.
He presses the gun even harder against my forehead, causing me to suck in a sharp breath. Our eyes lock once again.
“How do you know my name?”
I stare at him, trying to figure out the best way to answer his question. His hazel eyes are probing, but I find myself losing focus on his expression. His face has gone hazy, the bar even darker. The nausea from before returns with a vengeance, consuming my entire body and pressing down on me with a force that threatens to pin me to the floor.
I sway, lightheaded.
A strange trickling resonates around us, the sound deafening in the hushed bar. At first, I think I’m imagining it, but then I see the alarming change in his face.
His eyebrows pull together as he looks down, and suddenly, he’s taking a reflexive step back. I follow his gaze once more, my own vision doubling as I take in the tremendous pool of red that seems to surround me.
I watch the blood as it drips from my open wrist, the bandage soaked through and unravelling from its hiding place in the no longer white sleeve.
His eyes snap back to mine, and my every movement feels delayed as I glance up to meet them. The moment I do, the images from my vision flash through my thoughts, reminding me why I’m here.
I see his face. His hazel eyes.
I see his tears.
“I’m sorry, Wynter.”
Any and all light that the bar possessed vanishes in an instant, and the pain I had managed to forget hits me all at once. I gaze at him, concentrating on his face as much as my increasing blood loss will allow. Focusing on his eyes, which continue to stare back at me.
My lips pull into a smile as the darkness rushes to overcome me.
“I saw you,” I breathe.
